Anne with an E: Green Gables Farm is Real and You Can Visit!

Por Patricia Landim

The beloved series features the smart and dreamy girl Anne Shirley (played by Amybeth McNulty). She is an orphan who lives in an orphanage until the opportunity arises for her to be adopted by two siblings – Marilla (played by Geraldine James) and Mathew Cuthbert (played by R. H. Thomson) – who live on a farm called Green Gables.

They were expecting a boy but decided to keep her to help with the farm chores. Anne starts going to school, making friends, and admiring all the landscapes and animals of the place, creating adventures in both reality and dreams. The location, which served as an outdoor set for the series, looks like it came straight out of a book and the best part is that it exists and can be visited.

Green Gables is a historic property located in Cavendish, a rural area of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The farm was built in the 19th century and belonged to the MacNeill family. In 1895, Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery visited the farm and was inspired by its beauty and tranquility to create the setting for the "Anne of Green Gables" series.

The place has become a popular tourist attraction and was transformed into a museum in 1937. Visitors can stroll through the gardens and the house, which has been restored to resemble the time when the author visited the property. The house is decorated with period furniture and objects, such as the piano that was played by L.M. Montgomery.

Additionally, the property features several walking trails and picnic areas, as well as theatrical performances and other activities related to the books and the series. Green Gables farm is a must-visit destination for Anne fans.

Prince Edward Island is a province of Canada, located on the country's east coast. It is the smallest province in the country, known for its natural beauty, white sandy beaches, and cliffs. The island is a popular tourist destination and offers many attractions, including national parks, beaches, hiking trails, restaurants, and shops.

Some of the main tourist attractions on the island include:

-Prince Edward Island National Park covers over 60 kilometers of coastline and offers many outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, bird watching, and swimming.

-Point Prim Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse built in 1845 that offers panoramic views of the Northumberland Strait.

-The city of Charlottetown, the capital of the island, is known for its historic architecture, shops, restaurants, and theaters.

-The Confederation Bridge, is a 13-kilometer-long suspension bridge that connects Prince Edward Island to the Canadian mainland.

In addition, the island is famous for being the setting of the Anne of Green Gables books and series, with many of the locations depicted in the books being inspired by real places on the island, such as the fictional town of Avonlea. You can reach the destination by plane, ferry, or across the Confederation Bridge.

Apart from Green Gables, you can visit Balsam Hollow Forest and Campbell Pond Lake.

There are several souvenir shops with memorabilia of the characters, and you can even rent clothes similar to the period depicted in the series. To top it off, a local merchant created a raspberry soda, Raspberry Cordial, inspired by the beloved Anne's red hair.

Lucy Maud Montgomery

The author of the "Anne of Green Gables" books, never lived at Green Gables Farm. The farm was owned by the MacNeill family, whom Montgomery visited in 1895 when she was just 20 years old. Montgomery's visit to the farm was brief, but she was captivated by its beauty and the tranquility of the rural landscape.

Montgomery's experience on Prince Edward Island, where Green Gables Farm is located, had a profound influence on her life and work. After graduating from university, she returned to the island and worked as a teacher in various schools in the area. It was during this time that she began writing her first novels, many of which were inspired by her experiences on the island.

Although Montgomery never lived at Green Gables Farm, she drew inspiration from the farm and other locations on Prince Edward Island to create the story of Anne Shirley, the main character in her books. Green Gables Farm and the town of Avonlea, which are depicted in the books, are inspired by real locations on the island that Montgomery visited during her time in the area.

To make the series possible, only some of the outdoor scenes were filmed on the island. The rest of the filming took place in Ontario, also in Canada.
